Once upon a time, there was a busy country house where Mom, Dad, and all the brothers lived together with more animals than anyone could count.
They had two dogs named Brutus and Sadie, two cats named Rue and Oreo, a bearded dragon named Coconut, a crested gecko named Peach, a fish tank full of fish, two horses named Shooter and Legs, two guinea pigs named John Pork and Sassy Pig, two geese named Bevis and Goose, ducks including Kendrick, turkeys, and chickens named Sergeant Pecker, Dr. Pecker, Francisco, Sandy Cheeks, Little Richard, and Pants, who had very fluffy feather legs and feet. There were also quails, especially one important quail named Laura.
One morning, the family sat down for breakfast. Ray was eating French toast, bacon, and sausage. Cal was eating peas and pancakes. Luke was eating eggs. Enzo was eating eggs and bacon. Mom and Dad were also eating eggs and bacon.
Under the table, Brutus and Sadie sat perfectly still, staring up with hopeful eyes. Ray and Cal secretly dropped them food when no one was looking.
Ray glanced out the window and froze. Outside stood a tiny chicken with no feathers at all, shivering in the cold. It was Shaky, a chicken who was always nervous and always shaking.
It turned out someone had shaved Shaky!
Now they had a serious problem. They needed a chicken sweater.
They went to a small store nearby, but there were none. Then they went to a giant Tractor Supply store that was as big as a mall. They searched for an entire hour before finally finding the chicken sweater section. They bought a sweater and rushed home.
When they got back, Shaky was gone.
They searched the barn, but he was not there. They rode their horses through the neighborhood, but still no Shaky. They checked under cars and everywhere else they could think of.
At last, they found Shaky in the woods, sitting in a tree.
Luke flew his model airplane up into the tree, trying to help Shaky jump onto it. Instead, Shaky jumped away and started running. Everyone chased him until they finally caught him and put the sweater on.
Suddenly, Cal ran up, ripped the sweater off, tore it into pieces, grabbed Shaky, and ran away shouting, “Long live Lieutenant Feather Bottom!”
No one could believe it. Cal, had betrayed them!
