Childhood Memory

by Tu Anh (age 11) | Partner Organization: Blue Dragon Children's Foundation

Blue Dragon Children's Foundation is an Australian grassroots charity that reaches out to kids in crisis throughout Vietnam. They aim to break the poverty cycle by offering education and opportunities to those in most need.

When I was small, I often used to play games and fly kites with Thao. We often danced, played and sang near the river. Our friendship was connected to the kite. On windy afternoons, the kite soared and hummed in the blue sky.
One day, Thao and I were running after the kite and I stumbled over a rock. My leg was scratched and it bled. It was painful and I cried. Thao came to me, cleaned my wound and carried me home. The kite flew far away in the sky, taking our friendship everywhere. I will never forget that memory.
Then one day we had to be apart because I had to go back to my hometown with my family. When we were saying goodbye, we hugged and cried because we wanted to stay together forever. I gave her a kite that I had made the day before and said to her ‘remember me always, Thao’. Thao ran outside and brought me back a gift. Coincidently, it was also a beautiful kite. ‘When you fly the kite in your hometown, think about me, Tu Anh’. Thao said. I burst into tears and waved goodbye.
It is a beautiful friendship. We often write to each other to tell our stories about home and school. We hope to see each other again some day.
